Pluto's Ghost

Pluto's Ghost
Pages: 256
Genre: Realistic Fiction, Romance, Mystery
Rating: 4/5

Summary (from Goodreads.com)

"Murderer. It's one kick in the belly of a word isn't it? Has a taste, too. It tastes like barbed wire and has wild hyena eyes. Murderer. Murder-her. Did he? Did I? That's when I remember what I want to forget."
Jake Upshore has loved Skye Derucci since before he can remember. Volatile, complex and frustrated (he's got a label disorder from all the labels he's been given) at the best of times, Jake's on a desperate quest to find Skye before she aborts the baby he believes is his. As he hurtles headlong toward certain tragedy, Jake relives the fatal choices he's made and the powerful forces that have led him to this to end. A gripping thriller and a heart-wrenching love story, Pluto's Ghost is a raw and powerful novel about anger, escape, and redemptive love.

My Thoughts

I really liked this book even though I wasn't sure of it at first. It's slow paced at the beginning and then picks up a bit more, so don't quite reading! You won't be disappointed in the end! The writing was definitely something to marvel over, it was funny and touching.
I just want to hug Jake (main character). He's so sweet and thoughtful, despite his anger issues.
It was amazing to read and be able to see that Jake was serious when he meant he would do anything for the girl he loves, Skye, anything! It's not a sappy love story, it's not fairy-tale like, so don't expect that. It's a mature read, and Jake's story will stay with you for a long time.

Summary

Natalie Sterling wants to be in control. She wants her friends to be loyal. She wants her classmates to elect her student council president. She wants to find the right guy, not the usual jerk her school has to offer. She wants a good reputation, because she believes that will lead to good things.
But life is messy, and it's very hard to be in control of it. Not when there are freshman girls running around in a pack, trying to get senior guys to sleep with them. Not when your friends have secrets they're no longer comfortable sharing. Not when the boy you once dismissed ends up being the boy you want to sleep with yourself - but only in secret, with nobody ever finding out.
Slut or saint? Winner or loser? Natalie is getting tired of these forced choices - and is now going to find a way to live life in the sometimes messy, sometimes wonderful in-between.

My Thoughts

For those that would enjoy this, I think you would be in age range of 13-17. It wasn’t a challenging read for me. I did enjoy it, but just not as much as I would have hoped for. When I first began the book and then got halfway through I felt a little mislead because she was having issues with Mike and then you barely ever hear about him again...instead the story starts to focus on a different guy...  won’t say anymore because I don’t want to spoil anything.

Natalie, the main character, is NOT stupid. She’s actually smart, she knows how to get a situation under control and she can handle high-levels of stress quite well. I respect her for her integrity and her ability to be nice and caring to others. I respect her for trying to do the right thing, and giving others second chances. I think I’d friend her on Facebook...if she was a real person.

The story spoke volumes about sex and other pressures for a teenager. But it also expressed how we’re all looking for ourselves and who we want to be. I can guarantee the ending is not disappointing at all, it’s simply satisfying and I felt that I’d learned something valuable. That’s how books should leave you.

Overall, it was good. I would definitely recommend it, because it’s certainly worth the read. However, I think it could have been amazing with a few tweaks and characters with a bit more depth, I didn’t feel like I got to know everyone enough.

Ripple by Mandy Hubbard

Pages: 260
Genre: Romantic Fantasy
Rating: 5/5

Summary
After Steven died, Lexi realized she was cursed with a dark secret. Each day she goes to school like a normal teenager, and each night she must swim in her quiet lake as the siren she is. Lexi didn’t have any intention to kill Steven or anyone else; therefore she shut herself out from the world, vowing to protect her friends and family.

But suddenly, she’s caught between Cole, the new boy at school who may have the power to melt her icy exterior, and a handsome water spirit who says he can break Lexi's curse if she gives up everything else. Lexi is faced with the hardest decision she's ever had to make: the life she's always longed for - or the love she can't live without?

My Personal Thoughts

There’s something different about Ripple than anything else I’ve ever read, something about the way it’s written, the characters, the curse… It was a real current ride where I just didn’t know where I was going to end up next.

Mandy Hubbard lays it on thick that the protagonist, Lexi, is suffering deeply, drowning in sorrow, and treading water just to keep her friends safe and sound. Lexi isn’t exactly The Little Mermaid like most would expect, she’s a siren, a killer, forced to swim at night rather than sleep. I found myself rooting for Lexi to swim through those murky waters and find freedom. I wanted her to go back to her old life, her friends, to enjoy it. Yet, I love the dark brooding secret she harbors. It’s intriguing and I loved every word of it!

Anticipating, dark, and lovable, Ripple is short and to the point rather than annoyingly drawn out. It’s a book that girls would mainly enjoy, anyone in high school, and it’s not a challenging read, but it does make you think and wonder.

Maximum Ride: Saving The World And Other Extreme Sports by James Patterson

Maximum Ride Series: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports (Book 3)
by James Patterson

Pages: 405
Genre:
Action, Thriller, Mystery, Science Fiction, Adventure, Romance, Comedy/Humour
Rating: 5/5

“‘We will destroy you,’ the Flyboys droned. ‘You have no escape.’ That was the most imaginative, threatening thing the whitecoats had programmed these “droids” to say” –Maximum Ride

Summary
The time has arrived for Max and her winged "Flock" to face their ultimate enemy and discover their original purpose: to defeat the takeover of "Re-evolution", a sinister experiment to re-engineer a select population into a scientifically superior master race...and to terminate the rest. Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman, and Angel have always worked together to defeat the forces working against them--but can they save the world when they are torn apart, living in hiding and captivity, halfway across the globe from one another?

Why Read It?
I think if you've read the other two books, you'll know you have to read this one. And the ones after this. They're so fast-paced and pulse-pounding, with all the actionb, thrill, adventure and suspense with a twist of romance I don't think anyone is going to be able to put this series down.

My Thoughts
As I’ve mentioned before the character development is not that great. However, James Patterson doesn’t have much time to squish in much of that with all the action going on and with their lives on the line all the time. However, I can pick out a few traits of each character for the most part, to me I think they’re well-developed enough, although I would appreciate sometime in the book just to get to know the characters.
Anyway, put that aside and this third instalment of the Maximum Ride series has still got me on the edge of my seat. There is so much going on! I do have to admit it’s rather overwhelming; in a good way though. If it weren’t overwhelming where would all that suspense and thrill be? (laughs).
I don’t exactly have too much else to say... But Saving the world and Extreme Sports has taken the books to a whole new level! And I wonder what the fourth will be like! I hope the author will throw in a little more romance; as long as he doesn’t get mushy.

Twilight: The Graphic Novel (Volume 1) adpated by Young Kim and written by Stephenie Meyer

Pages: 224
Genre: Graphic Novel, Fantasy, Romance
Rating: 4

Summary

(Note: I copied the summary from goodreads.com)

When Isabella Swan moves to the gloomy town of Forks and meets the mysterious, alluring Edward Cullen, her life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. With his porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts, Edward is both irresistible and impenetrable. Up until now, he has managed to keep his true identity hidden, but Bella is determined to uncover his dark secret...

Why Read It?

Why not read it? I mean its Twilight all over again in a new and fresh way. You may or may not like it, but why not give it a try? If you’re a graphic novel reader or not this illustrated copy of Twilight (vol. 1) will most likely blow you away all over again. I believe this is a must-have for any Twilight fan.

My Thoughts

Even though I’m a big fan of Twilight, I really had no intention to read this graphic novel. It wasn’t because I was worried about how Young Kim would present it, it’s just that I don’t really care for graphic novels.
However, one day my friend and I were sitting in the book store and just looking at books and she insisted that I read it. It didn’t take me long, of course, but I did take some time to admire the pictures. I found it quite a addictive and I finished it right there in the store because we A) had the time and B) I had no intention of buying it. However, I am considering it.
The graphic novel was no a strict interpretation of the books or movies, which was actually a nice change. Maybe some people would have preferred the pictures to resemble the actors a little more, maybe not. I was quite content with it the way it was.
I cannot and will not try to pick out flaws in this graphic novel for the main reason that I do not read graphic novels and this is the first one that I have read.
I enjoyed this enough to read it again, maybe if I simply want to refresh my mind on the first book. All in all, though, even though I wish all the drawing had colour, it was great.

P.S. This is only volume one, so it was not the entire book and I am looking forward to volume 2.

Why Read It?

If you love mermaids, romance and a little bit of humour this is definitely something that you’ll want to add to your reading list. It’s easy to read and great for all ages.

My Thoughts

When I first read this book I was twelve or thirteen years old. I decided to pick it up again recently this year for the third time. It’s one of my favourite books and it reminds me of the little mermaid. It’s an adorable love story that I just can’t get over. I don’t know what else to say...

Angus, Thongs and Full-frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison

Genre: Comedy, Romance
Rating: 4
Pages: 247

There are six things wrong with my life.
1.I have one of those under-the-skin spots that will never come to a head, but lurk in a red way for the next two years.
2.It is one my nose.
3.I have a three-year-old sister who may have peed somewhere in my room.
4.In fourteen says the summer hols will be over and then it will be back to Stalag 14 and Oberfuther Frau Simpson and her bunch of sadistic “teachers.”
5.I am very ugly and need to go into an ugly home.
6.I went to a party dressed as a stuffed olive.

Summary

Georgia is just like any other girl; she shaved her eyebrows off accidentally, she’s desperate, believes herself to be ugly and just wants a boyfriend. This interesting diary-like story includes boy-stalking, teacher baiting and full snogging with a sex god.

Why Read It?

It’s one of those books that you can just laugh at and no doubt feel good about yourself. Georgia is a teenage girl I think anyone could relate to.

My Thoughts

This book was funny, and realistic. Georgia is just one of those characters that are so real. I haven’t read about a girl in a book that seemed so real like this I don’t think ever. However, I don’t have any intention on reading it a second time, because it wasn’t something that I absolutely loved, even though it was something I enjoy and gave me a good laugh. I’m going to recommend this to a lot of people, especially ones who are much into reading because it is a very easy read.

Dark Guardian: Dark Of The Moon by Rachel Hawthorne (Book 3)

Genre: Romance, Fantasy
Rating: 5/5
Pages: 262

(WARNING: THIS REVIEW WILL SPOIL THE OTHER TWO BOOKS, ESPECIALLY THE ENDING TO FULL MOON. YOU’RE READING AT YOU’RE OWN RISK!)

SCROLL DOWN TO READ THE REVIEWS FOR BOOKS 1 AND 2 IN THE SERIES....

“In wolf form, Connor always took my breath. I wanted to dig my hands in his fur, hold him close, and confess everything. I wanted him to shift back into human form, put his arms around me, and assure me that everything would be all right. But I knew none of that would ever happen. If he knew the truth about me, that I hadn’t shifted yet, he’d be appalled.” –Brittany

Summary

Everything is pointing to one answer for Brittany. The one answer she’d rather have to go deaf than listen to it through her ears, rather go blind than see, and rather die than have to live with it. She hasn’t experienced any of the intense, early signs of change that mark a Dark Guardian’s transformation.
And that’s not all Brittany has to worry about. She’s thriving for her true love, for some young man to pluck her out of uncertainty and disorientation. But not just any young man, she wants Connor and Connor only. And she knows she’ll never truly have Connor’s love if she’s not a shifter like him.
When she doesn’t transform on the full moon after her seventeenth birthday Brittany is so desperate to become a wolf that she’ll go to the extremes...

Why Read It?

Well, first, if you’ve read the first two books and you’re enjoying the series fo course you’re going to want to read this book. Dark of the Moon will leave you breathless and hoping everything will turn out well for Brittany.

My Thoughts

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I’ve rated these books all a five so far. It means I really like them, obviously! They are soooooo brilliant and every time she switches up the character perspective things just grow more intriguing by the page.
This book, as you know is in Brittany’s perspective. She has a much different personality than the other two girls and I can see why she has a hard time fitting in, besides the fact that she’s not really a shifter. Brittany has the determination that is at a level not many people reach. She’s outstanding! Literally! The other two books didn’t give her justice, however, Kayla and Lindsay had no idea about Brittany. Dark Of The Moon explains everything and it just makes you want more. Thank goodness, there is a fourth book which I have not read yet. I do own it, but I’m busy reading other things. I’ll read it as soon as possible, but right now I’m buried under a million other things to read.
Back to Dark of the Moon, I was able to relate to Brittany the most out of all three books. This is mostly because she’s the most lost, she doesn’t know who she is and I think everyone my age is trying to figure that out. Another is she’s lonely and she’s just waiting for that someone. And the worst part is where you really like someone and they don’t feel the same way, that’s a heart breaker and there’s no one in the world who hasn’t experienced that and Brittany is a perfect example of that... maybe just a bit extreme though.

Dark Guardian: Full Moon by Rachel Hawthorne (Book 2)

Genre: Romance, Fantasy
Rating: 5/5
Pages: 272

"-things had suddenly became very confusing and complicated. My feelings, my emotions - they were all over the place. my heart was telling me one thing, my head another." -Lindsay

Summary

Lindsay has always known her heritage. And when it comes to choosing her mate to transform with for her first full moon, the choice was obvious—Connor. She’s known Connor her entire life, literally. However, things get complicated when Rafe, shows up. And suddenly Lindsay has developed an unrelenting attraction to Rafe and she begins to doubt her future with Connor. She realizes her relationship with Connor is nothing like the sparks between Kayla and Lucas. Lindsay has to decide quickly before her transformation who is a good friend and who is her true love.

Why Read It?

This suspenseful Dark Guardian novel will tear you to pieces, like a dog and his favourite chew toy. You’ll stay up all night reading this one...

My Thoughts

This is not a book I have read this year. I am simply putting it up here to go with the book Dark of the Moon which is the third book in the series.
Full Moon picks up where Moonlight left off; only this novel follows Lindsay’s perspective, who is Kayla’s best friend. I liked that about the series. It keeps it fresh and I wasn’t so sure where Kayla and Lucas would be left for a second book. I’m glad Rachel Hawthorne continued the story this way...
This is my favourite book out of the series so far. Full Moon had that atmosphere where it doesn’t matter what decision you make someone’s going to get hurt... So you might as well make one that suits you best. However, Lindsay doesn’t even know what is going to be best for her. Should she choose between the boy she’s only just met or the one she’s known her entire life? What a difficult complicated decision.
Rachel Hawthorne will have you guessing to the very end. She sure had me guessing all the way through, because honestly if I were her I didn’t even know who I would have chosen... if I were her of course. If it were me... Rafe, for sure.
You know how I mentioned I’m really good at losing stuff and being forgetful earlier in the post for Moonlight. Well, I lost this book. I can’t find it anywhere! I’ll let you know when I come across it, hopefully soon. Wish me luck!

Evermore by Alyson Noel

Genre: Fantasy, Romance,
Rating: 3/5
Pages: 301

Summary
Sixteen-year-old Ever Bloom is left alone after a horrible accident that claims the lives of her family. Since then, she can see people’s auras, hear their thoughts, and know someone’s entire life story just by touching them. She now spends her life, going out of her way to retain her abilities and avoid human contact, and for those reasons the students at her new high school have branded her a freak.
Little does she know that it will all end soon, because when she meets the gorgeous, exotic and wealthy Damon Auguste her abilities temporarily vanish and as mysterious as he is to her, the only thing she knows for sure is that she’s falling deeply and helplessly in love with him.

Why Read It?

Evermore is an enjoyable, sometimes dark story about a girl with extraordinary psychic powers. The story gives you a suggestion of what it might be like being psychic. If you’re craving a twisted, creative and magical love story this will hit the spot!

My Thoughts

Evermore was one of those books where you’ll buy it because you feel like you won’t be disappointed. It was weird at times and impressive and I was totally right about going ahead and buying it. However, even though I have that craving to read it again, I might not.
I loved the way this book was written, it was very easy to read which made it a nice break from my normal level of reading. I am a sucker for love stories, especially ones like this and I plan on reading the rest of the series.
Damon is definitely not my type of guy, even though he’s “gorgeous, exotic and wealthy”. I think it was the way he was described in the book that turned me off and the fact that he’s a little too exotic for me.
I sort of connected with Ever, but in truth it was really difficult to see things her way. And there were times when I completely disagreed with her choices. One of the things among others that I understood about her was hiding her beautiful self, listening to really loud music and avoiding people. She’s got these abilities that she doesn’t know how to control and she’s forced to hide herself away from the rest of the world. I felt horrible for her and I wanted to do nothing but help.
Something else that bothered me about this story was the beliefs. The part about being reincarnated just made me feel really restless. This is what a lot of the story line leaned against, so if you don’t agree with reincarnation I wouldn’t suggest this book to you. However, I am a very open minded person and I think without this main ingredient the book wouldn’t have been anywhere near the same or as interesting without it.
A part that I was totally mesmerized by was when she turned to alcohol to make things better for her. It dulled her abilities and made her feel good. I think it’s a part of the book that would make anyone who has not tried alcohol before curious about it and something to just really think about. If you think like me, you’ll probably see that there are other ways to deal with things without the abuse of alcohol or drugs. I don’t think it was the Alyson Noel’s intention to say that there are other ways to deal with things because it’s a small hint that I don’t think many people would pick up. (You’ll know more about what I mean once you’ve read the book and you can leave a comment if you want to discuss it).
All in all, even though I thought the book was strange, I was able to relax and just simply enjoy this unthinkable story.

The Last Song By Nicholas Sparks

Genre: Romance, Tragedy
Rating: 5/5
Pages: 390

“Sometimes you have to be a part from people you love, but that doesn't make you love them any less. Sometimes you love them more." –Steve Miller

Summary

The life of seventeen year old Veronica “Ronnie” Miller’s life was flipped, twisted, shaken, and in her perspective torn apart when her parents divorced and her Father moved from New York city to Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. For three years, she remains angry and isolates herself from her parents and automatically pushes everyone away, mainly her father, that is, until her mom decides that she and her younger brother should spend the summer with him in North Carolina.
Living a quiet life in the beach town, Ronnie’s father, a former pianist is immersed in creating a work of art that will be the centerpiece of a local church. When Ronnie and her younger brother arrive, he continues his attempts to reach to her even though she insists on rejecting them. Rebellious Ronnie threatens to return home before the summer ends. Then suddenly, everything changes and Ronnie meets the town local heartthrob Will, the last person she thought she’d be interested in. Slowly but surely Ronnie lets her guard down, falls deeply in love, making amends with her father and unknowingly unlocking herself to the greatest happiness and pain that she could have never believed possible.

Why Read It?

The Last Song
will bring the very best of you to the front of your mind. It will make you think and make you see things so much differently. You’ll connect with all the characters and there’s nothing you can do about it. Ronnie will make you see her perspective and her father will make you see his and then you’ll be left dying to solve things for the both of them. Except you can’t and all you can do is read!

My Thoughts

Okay, so I can’t even begin to tell you how well I relate to Ronnie! There are parts of her that are just like me, and parts of her in me which I’m not sure how to unlock. Yes, there are so many girls that could relate to Ronnie, but the way I relate to Ronnie is unbelievable. We think almost the same way, the only thing that Ronnie has really got that I don’t is a lot of guts and a local heartthrob boyfriend.
Nicholas Sparks, wrote this in a way so you could see all the perspectives of the characters and that sure helps you understand things so much better... In other words it’s definitely well-written!
To be completely honest, the only reason why I read this book was because I knew Miley Cyrus was going to be in the movie. (And yeah, I’m a Miley Cyrus fan!) But I’m so glad I read it and I’m sure I would have eventually gotten around to reading it even if there wasn’t going to be a movie because I want to read Dear John (which I haven’t read yet, but will soon) and then probably or actually hopefully I would have discovered this book.
Focusing on Ronnie, I just stopped and thought about her character and thought, WOW, this girl is having a really hard time, even though most of it was her fault, and I just had to know how she got through it all.
The Last Song’s atmosphere changed immensely and continually throughout the plot. I believe that that is what made it such a touching novel and one that I never want to let go of!
What I learned from Ronnie... I learned that bottling anger up as she did is probably the most life ruining experience you will ever have and also extremely unhealthy! What I also discovered by reading about her is that I will always want to keep my friends and family close and that was the biggest mistake that she made...she pushed everyone away from her. The third thing I gained from her was that I should say what’s on my mind and always stand up for myself and what I believe in. I’m so glad I learned those lessons, and what’s just as great is that she learns them too!
I’ve never had a favourite book before, never actually. I mean Twilight was never even my favourite book... maybe a favourite series or something... but The Last Song is DEFINITLEY a FIVE OUT OF FIVE!!!!
So, please do me a big favour... or actually, correction... do yourself a big favour and keep your head attached your shoulders by READING the book BEFORE you see the MOVIE because for those who know me personally, when it came to Twilight, New Moon and now soon Eclipse, I was all on your case about reading the book first!!!!

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Genre: Science Fiction and Romance
Rating: 5/5
Pages: 619

"I knew it would begin with the end, and the end would look like death to these eyes. I had been warned. Not these eyes. My eyes. This was me now." ~Wanderer

Summary

Aliens have invaded our planet, but not the little Martians from Mars. These aliens or “souls" as they're called do not have a body or a host. In order for them to survive they must inhabit a living host and make it their own.

Melanie Stryder is one of the last humans, she strong, stubborn and determined to win. When her body is invaded by a “soul” named Wanderer, somehow Melanie doesn’t fade away as all the other humans have. She refuses to disappear and continues her battle to survive.

After Wanderer is inserted into Melanie she must do her job and search Melanie’s thoughts for any remaining humans. Instead Melanie fills Wanderer’s mind with visions of Jared, the man she loves and is still in hiding. Wanderer can’t seem to separate herself from her body’s desires and falls in love with the man she is suppose to expose. Finally, the two unwilling allies set off on an uncertain and risky search for the man they both love.

Why Read It?

The Host is a definite must read because of the complicated and compelling story line. It is absolutely original and will leave you wanting more. You’ll connect with both Wanderer and Melanie and want everyone to live in peace because you see both of the characters perspectives.

My Thoughts

Honestly, it took me forever to read this book. I had checked it out last year from the public library and had two weeks to read it. One day I sat down in English class and the next thing I knew a friend had stole the six hundred and nineteen paged novel away from me. He insisted on reading it during our reading time because it looked so interesting. I agreed to it and we switched books. So I sat there reading Airborn by Kenneth Oppel, which wasn't so bad, but not really to my interest. I'm not really sure if my friend cares for reading so much but this book he begged to take home overnight and then over the weekend. His dad apparently yelled at him for not being social enough because he had his head in this book. Finally, when I got my book back it had to go back to the library. I hadn't been able to read much of it and it took me forever to get my hands on it again. Finally, I did, but not through the library I ended up just buying it. :) (Laughs).

This book blew me away. The characters are so full of depth that I feel like I actually know them. It's hard, for me personally, to relate to them though, however The Host gave me a lot to think about. I realized it wasn't as much science fiction as I thought it might be. While reading it, I learned about how wonderful it is to be human, and how lucky I am to be me. I know mushy, right? But the book made me love my body (or "host"), when I put my flaws aside and was just thankful for what I had, which is a lot like being healthy, young, strong... All those things! And also something I must add! I had this little battle going on in my mind about how everything was going to work out because I really did want all the characters to live in harmony. I had to leave that to Stephenie Meyer to solve!

Problems I had with this book were at mostly the beginning. I was lost when I read the prologue and actually had to reread it a few times. Another issue I had was because since it's a rather mature read, there is a lot of description about the surroundings and what’s happening and that began to bore me a little, except it was WORTH READING!

Anyone who likes to discover new worlds, read about a wonderful romance, doesn't mind complicated plots and wants to be left guessing...this book is probably most likley for you! And if maybe this isn't something you particularly care for give it a try anyway...because it's always great to try something new!

I’m going to read this book again and again and again... So you might see it on the reading list for 2010 twice and that won’t be a mistake!!!
